چکیده

SummaryBackground Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common hospital-acquired infections, with an estimated 75% of UTIs caused by urinary catheters. In addition to significant healthcare costs and patient morbidity, escalating antimicrobial resistance reported uropathogens make investigation efficacious new strategies urgent importance. Aim To examine antibacterial activity a suite weak organic acids (WOAs) (citric acid, malic propionic mandelic lactic benzoic pyruvic acid hippuric acid), alone in combination, against nosocomial (Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Methods Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal (MBC), biofilm eradication (MBEC), fractional index (FICI) values kinetics WOAs were determined microdilution time-kill assays. Findings All tested displayed activities their planktonic modes growth when used individually. Moreover, combination synergistic P. S. aureus E. coli, reductions MIC up 250-fold formation. Conclusion The multi-mechanistic combinations identified herein anticipated play important role treatment prevention catheter-associated UTIs.

The highly synergistic, broad spectrum, antibacterial activity of organic acids and transition metals

For millennia, transition metals have been exploited to inhibit bacterial growth. We report here the potentiation of the anti-bacterial activity of transition metals by organic acids. Strong synergy between low, non-toxic concentrations of transition metals and organic acids was observed with up to ~1000-fold higher inhibitory effect on bacterial growth. We show that organic acids shuttle trans...

Fluoride and organic weak acids as modulators of microbial physiology.

Fluoride is widely used as an anticaries agent in drinking water and a variety of other vehicles. This use has resulted in major health benefits. However, there are still open questions regarding the mechanisms of anticaries action and the importance of antimicrobial effects in caries reduction. Fluoride acts in multiple ways to affect the metabolism of cariogenic and other bacteria in the mout...

Effects of Dietary Supplement of Organic Acids Induced Protective Immunity against Coccidiosis

This study evaluated effects of three products of dietary organic acids (Acidomix® AFG; Activate® AD and Lacplus) on protective immunity against coccidiosis. Two hundred and eighty 1-day broiler chickens were randomly divided into 8 groups by 5 replications (7 birds per replicate), comprising 2 controls (negative=N; positive=P) and 6 supplemented organic acid groups (1% AFG, 1% DA, 1% Lacplus; ...

ANTIBACTERIAL AND SYNERGISTIC ACTIVITY OF MANGROVE (Avicennia marina) EXTRACTS ON ESBL AND MBL PRODUCING UROPATHOGENS

Growing incidences of β-lactamase producing uropathogens have been observed worldwide. Extended Spectrum β-lactamase (ESBLs) and Metallo β-lactamase (MBLs) are two types of β-lactamases that have emerged as a major threat with limited treatment options. In the current study, the effect of Avicennia marina leaf and stem extracts was studied on 10 ESBL and 10 MBL producing uropathogens which were...

Synergistic activity of econazole-nitrate and chelerythrine against clinical isolates of Candida albicans

The aim of this investigation was to assess the in vitro interaction of two antifungal agents, econazole-nitrate and chelerythrine, against ten fluconazole-resistant clinical isolates and one ATCC type strain 10231 of Candida albicans. The checkerboard microdilution method was performed according to the recommendations of the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards, and the results...
